Kasandra Spurr has faced many challenges in her life starting at only six weeks old when her father passed away. After her father passed away, she moved around a lot which let her meet a lot of people. She settled in Nipawin, Saskatchewan finally where she attended L.P. Miller Comprehensive school with the idea that she was going to become a nurse once she was graduated because of her love of helping people. Kasandra was taking a biology class in high school where she learned very quickly that nursing maybe was not the best option for her as she feared needles and did not like the sight of blood. She realized that she would be able to fulfill her role of helping people by with their finances instead of their health, which is just as important.
After Kasandra graduated from L.P. Miller in the spring of 2019, she attended Cumberland College’s business program in Tisdale where she obtained her General business diploma in 2021. Kasandra decided that she wanted attend Cumberland College because it allowed her the opportunity to be able to continue to live at home while going to school. With Tisdale being only a short drive to Tisdale, she was able to carpool with a friend to save on gas. After Kasandra graduated Cumberland College with her diploma, she moved to Saskatoon to further her education in the field of business where she is set to graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Edward’s school of business in the spring of 2023. After she graduates from University, she will be returning to the Melfort area where she will be working as an Articling Accountant.
Kasandra says that her experience at the college helped shape in into the person that she is today. She loved the fact that the classrooms are smaller, so you can get to know your fellow classmates better. Kasandra said that her and her classmates became like family. The instructors and staff that worked with Kasandra helped and supported her and her classmates when they needed it, even providing them with a tutor when they needed it.
Some of Kassandra’s favorite memories at the college were when they would have speakers attend. She said it was very informative to be able to learn about different career paths from different people. “My advice to current and future students would be to put in the hours and you will achieve success. It’s not going to be easy but there is nothing more rewarding than successfully completing something that challenges you. There will be days when you doubt yourself but remember you deserve to be where you are because you have worked hard to get there. Keep going I am rooting for you all and so are many others.”
Cumberland College is proud to have Kasandra as an alumni success. Kasandra has demonstrated how hard work and determination pays off.
