IATEC (Indigenous Access & Transition Education Certificate)

Overview:

Take the next step towards a university degree!  Enroll in the Indigenous Access and Transition Education Certificate (IATEC) program offered at James Smith Cree Nation starting January 2022.  This 8-month program offered in partnership with First Nations University of Canada (FNUC) will prepare you for success in post-secondary education. 

WHAT IS THE INDIGENOUS ACCESS AND TRANSITION EDUCATION CERTIFICATE (IATEC)?

  • IATEC is an eight-month program that will prepare you for success in post-secondary education in any area and will help you build on your existing skills and abilities through specialized student supports.
  • While you study, you will earn university credits transferable into many post-secondary programs.

WHO SHOULD ENROLL? 

  • Students with a Grade 12 standing
  • Mature students, and anyone wishing to improve their skills before entering university

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ATTENDING? 

  • Study with the same classmates over an 8 month period in a family-like setting with small classes 
  • Become prepared personally and emotionally for university with First Nations teachings and perspectives

Winter Semester*

  • PMTH091 - Intermediate Algebra I
  • INDG104 - Introduction to Indigenous Higher   Learning
  • ISW377 - Introduction to Social Work
  • RDWT120 - Reading and Writing I

Spring/Summer Semester*

  • PMTH092 - Intermediate Algebra II
  • BIOL140 - Human Biology and LAB
  • INDG100 - Introduction to Indigenous Studies
  • ENGL100 – Introduction to English

All IATEC courses are 3-credit university courses recognized through the University of Regina’s Centre for Continuing Education.

Please note:  Students will be considered full-time if they enroll in all of the courses and the corresponding tutorial/study sessions.

An Information Session is planned for November 17, 2021 starting at 1 pm at the James Smith Training Centre.  Anyone interested in learning more about the program is encouraged to attend!

 

Requirements:

To become a student at Cumberland College and FNUC you must first apply to the University of Regina. The IATEC program application deadline is Dec 16, 2021.

Application Process:

  • Apply online to the U of R or by completing a paper application.
  • Pay a one-time non-refundable $100 application fee.
  • Provide supporting documents, like official high school transcripts. Transcripts must be forwarded directly from the Ministry of Education or other educational institutions.
  • Complete the Cumberland College Application Form (green apply button at the top of this page) to indicate interest in the program and to receive program updates.

Notes:

Funding
Students are responsible for obtaining their own funding.  Students will be considered full-time which is important for sponsors. Potential sources of funding include:

  • First Nations (Band Office)
  • Gabriel Dumont Institute Training and Employment
  • Canada-Saskatchewan Career and Employment Services for those eligible for EI
  • Student Loans
 
*Start looking into funding options as soon as possible!  Students are encouraged to seek funding at the same time as they are completing the application process.
