Professional Management Certificate

Overview:

Explore key areas of management including communication, teamwork, problem solving and an understanding of the principles of business management and their interrelationships.

You will also learn key concepts of organizational behaviour and the behaviour of individuals and groups in organizations, as well as effective supervisory skills through theory and practical application.

Not sure you want to complete a full certificate?  Courses can be taken as individual professional development courses to brush up on your knowledge or add new skills to your professional repertoire.

Students who complete the Professional Management Certificate gain in demand skills and become University of Regina Alumni.

Course Descriptions

Fundamental Project Management Principles (Required) Sep 13-15 8:30am-12:00pm
You will learn the fundamental tools and skills that support effective project management.  Topics include project initiation, planning, controlling, implementing and closing.  You will examine the role of the project manager with respect to team, client and stakeholder communications; common project management terminology; and how to apply project planning and control techniques to the workplace.

Business Communication (Required) - Oct 5-6 8:30am-12:00pm
The focus is on the elements of clear, concise and efficient business communication.  You will learn how to read the situation; set the tone and persuade all types of audiences in both oral and written communication.  First, you will learn how to prepare concise, high-impact documents and presentations that achieve results which are essential for business success.  You will have the opportunity to practice writing for situations that match your business needs (e.g. abstracts, proposals, reports and email correspondence).  In the second day, you will learn to take your business ideas and translate them into quality presentations.  As well, you will learn presentation assembly, public speaking skills, relaxation and grounding techniques that will leave you more confident in your oral communication skills.

Principles of Effective Leadership (Required) - Jan 8-10 1:30-4:30pm
You will learn the skills and processes needed to increase leadership awareness.  You will explore topics such as motivation, leadership style, implementing change, setting and achieving standards and corrective discipline.

Fundamentals of Accounting for Non-Accountants (Required) Jan 31-Feb 2 1:30-4:30pm
In the course, Fundamentals of Accounting, you will learn how financial statements are prepared and how to interpret financial statements and data in order to make proper financial decisions.  Topics include discussion of accounting and financial management principles, financial reporting, accounting processes and budgets, investment analysis, internal controls, audit principles, risk assessment and performance evaluation.  This course is designed for non-accounting managers and personnel who must work with internal accounting/financial data.  Please bring a calculator to this course.


Electives (3 are required)

Performance Management - Dec 13-15 8:30-11:30am
You will learn how to focus on aligning the goals of the organization, department and employee.  Learn how to engage employees and give feedback, explore ideas of what motivates your employees and how to show recognition that your employees will value will be explored.  Performance planning, individual goal setting and preparing for performance reviews will also be covered.

Negotiation and Conflict Resolution - Mar 13-15 1:30-4:30pm
You will examine why conflict arises in the workplace, discuss the importance of resolution mechanisms and learn practical tips for managing conflict.  You will also learn constructive routes to communication and agreement, consider your own method of dealing with conflict and practice options for communicating more effectively.

Customer Service Excellence Nov 28-30 1:30-4:30pm
Customers are the life blood of organizations!  Customer care includes relationship building and management which includes critical considerations in building and maintaining positive relationships between companies and organizations and their clients or customers; in turn supporting important business goals and strategic objectives.  This course will examine best practices and necessary skills to cultivate genuine and authentic engagement while improving the customer service experience!  Through examining real life organizations, scenarios and application of best practices in various business industries and settings, this course is designed to be a catalyst in advancing the skills required for customer service excellence.

Effective Recruitment and Retention (Elective) Online Dates Pending
You will learn how to short-list candidates for an interview, common interview techniques, standard interview questions, behaviour based questions, how to write interview questions, illegal interview questions to avoid, how to asses interview responses, questions to ask references and choosing a successful candidate

Leading in a Diverse Environment (Elective) Online Dates Pending
You will learn about the various forms of diversity in the workplace including race, ethnicity, gender and multi generational workers.  You will understand the rights and responsibilities of your position as a manager and those of your employees.  You will explore various skills that will allow you to be empowered to avoid and manage conflicts in the workplace, and to create an inclusive work environment.

Strategy and Risk Management (Elective) Online Dates Pending
You will learn about strategic planning and the related subject of risk management.  You will begin by exploring the question: "What is strategy?" and apply the answers to various real world examples.  Finally, you will identify and prioritize various risks (financial and human resources, safety) and develop strategies and plans that mitigate organizational risk.

Requirements:

  • Comprised of:  4 required courses + 3 electives
  • Duration: 14 hrs per course X 7 = 98 hrs total
  • Delivery: Face-to-face and remote offerings
  • Achievement: Professional Management Certificate
  • Assessment: Course completion based on pass/fail assigned by instructor. Based on 80% attendance of each day synchronous learning; completing assignments and group work; and active participation.You must commit to a total of 14 hours of learning including: pre-work, after class work with your group, and on your own.
  • Completion timeline: Within three years from the term in which you begin the program.
Tuition: $4,865*

Note: all Professional Development Certificates are non-credit/non-academic and do not offer course credit at the Universities, Sask Polytech, or other academic institutions.

 

PLEASE NOTE: This course is not eligible for a T2202A tax slip.  Courses must be a minimum of 10 hours classroom study per week for a minimum of 3 consecutive weeks to qualify.

This course is not eligible for International admission.
