Level 1 Literacy

The Literacy Program at Cumberland College is designed to help adults improve their basic reading, writing, and numeracy skills. Level 1 learners begin by learning the foundations of reading and numeracy.

The Circle of Learning Benchmarks describes literacy as a collection of skills, practices, and learnings that contribute to an individual’s ability to understand, communicate, and participate at home, at work, in education, and in the community.  Also included are:

Tutors may be available at Melfort, Nipawin, and Tisdale for individual and/or group Literacy classes. It is never too late to learn to read!  Individualized programs may be provided from September to June. Please contact your nearest College office for more information.

ABE - Red Earth First Nation Level 1 Literacy

Serve It Right Saskatchewan (SIRS)

Serve It Right Saskatchewan (SIRS) is a training program that promotes the responsible service of alcohol in Saskatchewan. Training topics include ways of identifying intoxication, how to handle situations involving minors, effective approaches in discontinuing or refusing the sale or service of alcohol, and facts and figures on legal responsibilities and liabilities.

On June 22, 2015, the Government of Saskatchewan announced that mandatory server intervention training would be phased in over a three year period.

  • By June 30, 2016, all owners and managers will be required to have completed the training and new hires must take the training within 30 days of beginning employment.
  • By June 30, 2017, there must be at least one person on each shift who has completed the training.
  • By June 30, 2018, all employees involved in the sale and service of alcohol must have completed SIRS.
