Cumberland College offers the pre-professional year of classes that lead into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Saskatchewan.  The pre-professional year is study at the post-secondary level consisting of 30 credit units of courses. A minimum weighted average of 60% in these courses is required for admission to Nursing.  Admission to Year 2 of Nursing is competitive, therefore, the average for admission to Year 2 is normally higher than 60%.

The College of Nursing offers three years of nursing education that builds upon a pre-professional year leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.). Students in the pre-professional year study courses in the humanities, natural, social and health sciences all of which are foundational for the nursing program. The complete program is offered in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, Yorkton, and the north.  Part-time study is an option, but all courses must be completed within six years of commencing the first nursing course.

In order to be eligible for licensure with the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses' Association (SRNA) graduates must pass a national council licensure examination (NCLEX) and pay the required fees.


High school requirements for the pre-professional year of study:

  • Grade 12 with a 70% average including:
    • English A30 and B30
    • Biology 30
    • Chemistry 30
    • Foundations of Math 30 or Pre-Calculus 30 (or Math B30, but Math C30 is recommended).

University pre-professional year requirements:

  • English 3 cu
  • Indigenous/ Native Studies 3 cu
  • Chemistry 3 cu
  • Biology 3 cu
  • Statistics 3 cu
  • Nutrition 3 cu
  • Psychology 3 cu
  • Social Science Elective 3 cu
  • Electives 6 cu


In addition to the pre-professional first year courses, the following are program requirements for the second year of the B.S.N. program:

  • Heart Saver CPR Level C with AED *
  • A Standard First Aid Certificate *
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information (WHMIS)
  • Transferring Lifting Repositioning (TLR) Program*
  • Respiratory Protection Fit Testing
  • Immunization
  • Criminal Record Check: Students who fail to submit the results will be excluded from contact with clients and may be required to withdraw from the program.  Updated criminal record checks may be required later in the program based on clinical agency requirements. Criminal record checks can sometimes take a few months to process, so it is important you arrange for this as soon as possible.

You can complete a pre-professional year (30 credit units) at Cumberland College.  To complete your Nursing degree you must move to one of  the University of Saskatchewan nursing campuses (Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, LaRonge, Ile-a-La-Cross, and Yorkton).  You must apply to and be accepted by the University of Saskatchewan or University of Regina to start your pre-professional year at Cumberland College.
